SRI LANKA ECONOMIC AND COMMERCIAL NEWS - May 2002.

The Economy
The Central Bank in its Annual Report stated that Sri Lanka is expecting a growth of 3.7% in 2002 with strong improvement in the second half of 2002, due to the global economic recovery gathering momentum, increased business and improved weather conditions. The industrial sector is expected to revive due to the recovery in industrial countries coupled with a high domestic demand owing to the expected improvement in business confidence. However, despite positive economic achievements, Sri Lanka’s economic development has lagged behind East Asian countries.
The ADB President, in his address to the ADB Board of Governors, during the Annual meeting in Shanghai, predicted an improved economic outlook for Sri Lanka. He also reaffirmed ADB’s commitment to the rehabilitation and peace efforts in Sri Lanka.
