Metso Power, headquartered in Gothenburg, utilised Swedish Trade Council’s Customer Search assistance, one of a few projects they collaborated with Swedish Trade Council on. The Customer Search project consisted of Swedish Trade Council analyzing the Canadian market to determine which pulp & paper mills would most likely need and be interested in Metso Power’s equipment. Various different parameters were measured to determine the suitable sales candidates. Of the 92 pulp & paper mills in Canada, five were considered as strong candidates in need of technology like Metso Power’s. Of those five candidates meetings were booked with the three mills most interested in Metso Power’s technology. These meetings took place in March 2011 over a three day span, with mills located in the western part of Canada. The results of the project were favourable to Metso Power, as one of the mills they met ended up purchasing Metso Power’s technology. According to Gene Christensen, General Manager of Business Development for Innovations at Metso Power, “The Swedish Council did a good job of putting together a marketing plan and visiting program that was a cost effective benefit to Metso.”Canada is one of the top producers of pulp and paper in the world. The forestry sector, including the pulp and paper industry contributes to 3% of Canada’s GDP, and over $34 billion in exports.
