Sweden has agreed with China to assist in the building-up of an ecological city in Wuxi. The agreements were signed by State Secretary Elisabeth Falemo during her visit to Shanghai and Wuxi in July 2010.
The eco-city has an area of 2.4 sq km an is located in the centre of the Taihu New City, which has an area of 150 sq km and a planned population of 850 000. The master plan for the area was done by the architect bureau Tengbom and delivered in april 2010. Technologies and systems for the Sino-Swedish eco-city can be used also in the whole 150 sq km according to vice mayor Fang Wei.
The Swedish Trade Council has through the SSSBP an agreement with the city of Wuxi about sustainable trade signed already in 2009. SSBP will now focus on cooperation with Wuxi authorities to introduce Swedish environmental technology into the eco-city.
