With the aim of gathering all the Swedish knowledge and experience within sustainable development, the concept and trademark “SymbioCity” was launched in 2008 by the Swedish Government and Swedish Industry. Several hundred Swedish consultants, contractors and system suppliers are organized in one network, administered by the Swedish Trade Council, dedicated to spreading the vision of sustainable urbanism and facilitating its implementation.
SymbioCity promotes technological urban resource efficiency – i.e. creating synergies across and between different urban systems or fields of action. At the same time as it emphasizes renewable resources and resource management which minimize waste and optimize recovery and recycling, it encourages the development of new and better system solutions as well as a more efficient use of natural resources.
During the lasts two years, SymbioCity was introduced at more than 30 international exhibitions, seminars and delegation visits around the world. It has been very well received and Tangshan, China; Toronto, Canada and Pune, India are just some of the cities that have already adopted the concept, or used it as a source of inspiration.
One key to success for the SymbioCity concept is to offer a model which may be adapted to different development levels of cities and towns as well as different planning situations. Another success factor is the possibility to deliver value – obtain more for less by creating synergy effects through integration of different city functions.
