İstanbul takes lion's share with 23.9 pct in household spending

Turkey's largest economic hub, İstanbul, accounted for 23.9 percent of total household consumption expenditures in the country between 2008 and 2010, 5.5 percent above its closest rival, the Aegean region.

In İstanbul, while expenditures on housing and rent came in highest at 33.4 percent of the total, food and non-alcoholic beverages followed with 17.9 percent. In terms of expenditures on transportation, central Anatolia had the highest figure with 16.8, and the eastern central Anatolia region had the lowest, 12.3 percent. As for expenditures on communications, the eastern Black Sea region posted the highest numbers, at 4.9 percent, while İstanbul and western Anatolia had the highest percentage, with 2.9 percent each, in entertainment and cultural activity spending. For expenditures on education, İstanbul again topped the list with 2.8 percent.
