In order to counteract this situation the Swedish Trade Council (STC) and South Africa's Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), have been running a project funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) to promote skills development and economic growth in South Africa. The project aimed at creating jobs and speed up economic growth in South Africa. It also aimed at involving Swedish businesses in order to develop skills which currently are scarce among young South Africans.
The Broader Economic Cooperation involved activities such as developing and expanding industrial schools, trainee programmes, management training and entrepreneurship development. Special focus areas were the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, gender equality, corporate social responsibility and broad-based black economic empowerment.
The BEC did not only benefit South African workers and businesses, but also Swedish companies based in South Africa as it increased their access to skilled employees.
